Announcing the Washington Square Kids in Culture Series - RSVP Today!
The Washington Square Association, the venerable institution founded more than one hundred years ago to enhance the interests of the Park and its environs, is pleased to announce "WSA Kids in Culture" a free pilot program of art and chess lessons for children aged 11 through 13 in Washington Square Park, the center of Village Culture.
The free program is to take place the last week of May and the first week of June. The "WSA Kids in Culture" program is presented by the Washington Square Association in cooperation with the Salmagundi Club, our neighbor on Fifth Avenue, a center for American Art since 1871, and the Marshall Chess Club, the historic chess club located in the heart of Greenwich Village.
All the programs are open to beginner through intermediate levels and are on a first come, first served basis. The art class will accommodate 12 students per class. The chess lessons will have 8 participants daily. We suggest one take advantage of the full series of 4 classes but, only if available, drop in kids may take part. Registration Information can be found shortly at the Washington Square Association web site, here: http://www.washingtonsquarenyc.org/washington-square-family-events
The Salmagundi "Plein Air" classes (the art of painting in the open air) will be taught by some of the Club's eminent artists who have enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to reach budding artists.
The medium will be watercolors and other materials appropriate to the "Plein Air" tradition. This series will begin on Tuesday May 26. It. will take place twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30 to 5:30, through June 4. We will meet in the north west corner plaza of the park.
The Marshall Chess Club will present a series of chess classes for beginners. The Club's instructors are very experienced, including tournament level players, all anxious to introduce our WSA Kids to "The Royal Game”. These free classes will take place Wednesdays and Fridays at 3:30 to 5:30 beginning Wednesday May 27 through Friday June 5. We will meet in the North West corner plaza (Rain dates tbd).
The Washington Square Association will oversee all the activities with our members monitoring the groups in cooperation with the Parks Department.
We are looking forward to a beautiful, quiet experience for these "Tweens" in the always exciting life of the Park.
The Washington Square Association is proud to present this experience, another example of tradition and service to our neighbors!!!!!!
